Hi guys! Im very new when it comes to owning a pet bird. Yesterday I finished constructing a bird cage which I sort of wrapped around a tree in front of our home. I still haven't decided what bird to buy. At first, I was thinking of lovebirds because when i was young my father used to keep them as pets. But my uncle (who helped me build the birdcage) told me these are no longer "in" nowadays. Instead he advised me to buy african lovebirds or cockatiel.

What do you think guys? What are the pros and cons of these two species?

Thanks in advance! biggrin.gif

hi sir. welcome to BIRDS Inc Forum. well, it depends upon your choice of bird actually. why dont you try to survey the birds first and then decide. if you ask me, i will then tell you to own cockatiels because they are my favorite. a perfect bird for me with a good body and long crest wink.gif they are hardy when it comes to weather change and prolific breeders even in colony setting. you just have to learn the techniques to avoid fights on the colony specially during breeding periods. by the way sir, how big is the cage you built? is it provided with roof to shelter the birds during heavy rains or intense heat, have a location for the nest boxes if you intend them to breed? you can post the picture of your set-up and maybe we can suggest as to what bird it will fit. pardon me for not discussing the african lovebirds (agapornis species) in colony setting here. based from my readings, they do not fit well in colony setting specially if your cage is not that big.

hope this helps. please feel free to ask more questions and our members are very much willing to help wink.gif

Hello,

Welcome to BIRDS forum...

Regarding your question: All birds are beautiful... but what is your intemntion in trying to have them? Is it for breeding?, ornamental decofration or simply to enjoy seeing them flying? You first need to know your intention so you will have focus in keeping them...

Try to feel which bird/specie reaches your heart the most so you will always feel content in keeping the birds....

Goodluck and please don't hesitate to keep on posting...

Happy Birding!

sir ask ko lng po what kind of materials you used for the cage,
God Bless

My apologies for it took me quite a while to respond. First thank you for the replies, advices and the warm welcome. biggrin.gif

I got a pair of african lovebirds which I bought from my uncle.

@ sir corics, the cage is about 7 feet high and the trunk of the tree is inside it, the tree extend beyond the roof so a little water goes in pag umuulan, but the pair of birds I have now is safe naman from the rain.

@ ma'am romiles, I agree all birds are beautiful. my purpose in keeping them as pets is that I want to enjoy hearing them sing and watching them fly around. Its has a calming effect on me. biggrin.gif

@ sir andong_line, thanks for the advise sir. we used ordinary screen and 2x2 wood lang sir but we made sure wala silang malalabasan. hopefully wag agad masira. will try to post pics asap. biggrin.gif

Now weeks ago, the pair I have produced 5 eggs but unfortunately only 1 was hatched and the bad news is this morning before I left for work, I found the baby bird dead. sad.gif

Its so sad to hear about the death of your chick.

Anyway, they will still breed in the future, you just need to make adjustments for them to breed successfully.

Are they still in the big cage for breeding? How about the other eggs, were they hatched too? Or have you removed them all from the nest?

Then yun nga this morning bago ako pumasok sa work maglalagay sana ako ng feeds sa bowl. Nakita ko siya parang mahina at nasa labas ng nest, binalik ko sya sa nest at pumasok nako. Then my wife texted me minutes later informing me na patay na nga yung inakay at nilalanggam na. sad.gif

Yes ma'am they are still in the big cage. The other eggs were not hatched and I already removed them from the nest.

Should I transfer the pair to a smaller cage so they can breed successfully?

Thanks in advance!

Eggs are hatched every other day, if inalis mo na sila, have you checked on the eggs if they are fertile first? Candle the eggs para malaman mo if may buhay na chicks saloob o wala.

Yup, nice if you will transfer them to a breeding size cage. Yung cage kasi nila ay pang flight ang size.

Hope na makatulong kami kahit papano sa u.

Makasagot na po, ang crop po ay yung lagayan nila ng pagkain.
